Below the Waistline 26

The roll

How incredibly careless, indeed utterly irresponsible, to carry her life roll so conspicuously and completely unprotected in her shopping bag. Doing something like that is tantamount to social suicide. He doesn’t even need to be a skilled pickpocket to take it. He follows the stranger discreetly, seizes the roll when no one is looking and quickly hides it under his jacket. Once he arrives at his dingy flophouse, he opens it immediately and inspects its contents. Yes, it really is this woman’s life roll. It contains everything that is indispensable to her life. All her ID cards and documents. All her passwords and codes. He now has easy access to all the victim’s money, her house, her car – in short, everything that must be valuable to her in her life. He can now even assume her identity entirely and have her pension paid out to him. And no one would take the old woman seriously if she were to report the loss of her life roll.

When the woman realises a little later that her life roll is gone, she feels incredibly liberated and overjoyed.
